Program Note
“River Anne,” named in honor of Queen Anne of England (1665-1714) was the original name given by English settlers to what we now call the Rivanna River that runs through Charlottesville, VA. Over time the name contracted to “River Anna” then to Rivanna. River Anna was written while considering the interactions between Virginia’s Monocan Indians and the colonial world of Thomas Jefferson set against the backdrop of the timeless nature of the river itself. Through passages of static chords and linear motion, River Anna sonically represents the flow of this river and the history of the people it has sustained.
River Anna was Commissioned by Wayla Chambo for the Youth Orchestras of Charlottesville/Albemarle Flute Ensemble
