Program Note
Eleki-Robo was inspired by the Japanese “eleki” surf rock style, which emerged after the Ventures toured Japan in 1962. I came across this style while playing guitar for Dzian!, a band that specializes in vintage rock music from East Asia. Eleki music combines the scales, rhythms, and performance style of traditional Japanese music with virtuosic guitar rock. Eleki-Robo features PAM (Poly-tangent Automatic multi-Monochord) and MADI (multi-Mallet Automatic Drumming Instrument), created by Expressive Machines Musical Instruments.
